Landscaping SUSTAINABILITY AND WATER CONSERVATION - March 25, 2026
HOA Connect Houston’s March 25, 2026 Board Workshop brought together HOA leaders, industry experts, and local officials for an informative evening centered on landscaping sustainability and water conservation. Held at Typhoon Texas Houston, the event provided attendees with practical strategies and forward-thinking insights to help communities reduce costs, improve curb appeal, and manage resources more efficiently.
The workshop opened with a comprehensive presentation from Texan Landscaping Rivera, which addressed the unique challenges HOAs face in the Houston climate, including extreme heat, rising water costs, and ongoing maintenance demands. Attendees were introduced to a three-pillar approach to sustainable landscaping—water-smart native plants, smart irrigation technology, and proactive turf and soil health management—designed to create resilient, cost-effective common areas. Real-world examples highlighted how native plants, irrigation audits, and soil improvements can significantly reduce water usage while enhancing long-term property value and visual appeal.
WaterLogic expanded on these concepts with a deeper look into water conservation technologies and strategies, including weather-based irrigation systems that use evapotranspiration (ET) data to optimize watering schedules. The presentation emphasized the importance of using the right amount of water at the right time to support healthy landscapes while minimizing waste, reinforcing the workshop’s core theme of efficiency and sustainability.
Rick Ellis, Executive Director of the Association of Water Board Directors – Texas, followed with an in-depth overview of Municipal Utility Districts (MUDs) and their critical role in supporting community infrastructure. His presentation covered how MUDs operate, how they differ from HOAs, and how they fund and manage essential services like water, sewer, and drainage. Ellis also addressed the growing importance of water conservation in Texas, highlighting population growth, drought conditions, infrastructure challenges, and regulatory mandates driving the need for smarter water management.
The evening concluded with insights from Fort Bend County Precinct 4, which shared updates on community engagement initiatives, infrastructure projects, and partnerships with HOAs. Topics included public safety programs, mobility improvements, and collaborative efforts such as landscaping agreements, sidewalk enhancements, and community-driven initiatives aimed at improving quality of life for residents.
Attendees left the workshop with actionable tools, a stronger understanding of water conservation challenges, and valuable connections with industry professionals and public officials. The event reinforced the importance of proactive planning, sustainable practices, and collaboration in building and maintaining thriving HOA communities.
